What is a Crown?

A crown is a toothlike cap that fits over the top of a diseased or decayed tooth once the tooth has been cleaned and shaped accordingly. Whilst crowns can be a standalone restorative treatment, they also form part of a dental bridge.

Your Patient Journey

Consultation

If you are new to the practice, a full dental examination will need to be completed, including a set of X-rays.

Your dentist will closely examine the damage your tooth has sustained and identify whether this is down to decay, infection, disease, or physical trauma such as a blow to the mouth.

We will invite you to attend a second appointment if you wish to go ahead and have a crown placed in the interests of your oral health.

Treatment visit No. 1

Your dentist will prepare your tooth, numbing it with local anaesthetic. If you’re nervous about the procedure, we have the option of IV sedation to make you more relaxed throughout.

The decay at the site of the tooth is removed, and the tooth is shaped to receive the crown at a future appointment. A post-procedure digital scan is taken to provide the basis for your new crown, and we will fit you with a temporary crown to wear.

Treatment visit No. 2

When your new crown is ready, our friendly reception team will let you know and book you for a fitting appointment. During this appointment, the temporary crown is removed. In some cases, this doesn’t require anaesthetic. Your new crown is placed over the top, and your dentist carefully checks it for fit and bite. A special adhesive cements the tooth in place.
